Katayoun Javan: Building a home away from home

  • State Library of Victoria (map)

What makes someone travel across the world to start a new life in a strange country?

Photographer Katayoun Javan explores the themes of immigration, home and diaspora in this series of photographs featuring Iranian immigrants to Victoria.

Accompanying the photographs are short statements by the sitters explaining why they immigrated and how they feel about living in Australia.

This moving exhibition is the outcome of a State Library Victoria Creative Fellowship in 2015–16.

Please note the views and opinions expressed in this exhibition are those of the artist and exhibition participants and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Library.

About Katayoun Javan

Katayoun Javan is an Iranian photographer who immigrated to Melbourne in 2009. She completed a Master of Fine Art (Photography) at Deakin University in 2013. Initially, she came to Australia to continue her education in photography but she found Melbourne such an inspiring city – alive with art and culture – that she decided to stay. This display fulfils a long-held ambition to create a photographic project on Iranian immigrants in Melbourne.
